Q. What is a crown?

A. A dental crown is a porcelain or ceramic material used to encase an existing tooth.

Q. Why would I need a crown?

A. A dental crown is recommended when a tooth has extensive decay, after Root Canal Treatment is completed or to protect a cracked tooth.

Q. How long will a crown last?

A. A dental crown will last for many years if cared for properly. It is always recommended to continue having a professional clean every 6 months, brush and floss twice a day to take care of your new crown.

Q. How many visits will I need for a crown?

A. At your first visit we will take an impression of your teeth. The mould of your teeth is then sent to our dental laboratory to make the crown. We will make you a temporary crown to wear on the tooth while you wait 2 weeks for the crown to be made. When you return in 2 weeks, the temporary crown is removed and the actual crown is bonded to your tooth.

Q. What can happen if I don't have the crown recommended by the dentist?

A. After root canal treatment the tooth has no blood supply and will gradually discolour and become brittle which can then lead to tooth loss. If the tooth has a simple or complex crack and a crown is not placed, there can also be tooth loss.
